NEW YORK -- It certainly appears that trip to Las Vegas turned Travis dArnaud into a much more confident hitter. Discount Air Jordan Shoes . The rookie catcher snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run double, and the New York Mets overcame an early injury to starter Jonathon Niese, beating the skidding Texas Rangers 6-5 Friday night to stop a four-game slide. "Felt really good," dArnaud said. "Its a big win for us to start the homestand." Lucas Duda hit a two-run homer off Yu Darvish, and the Mets opened a 10-game homestand with their second victory in nine games. An angry Niese left in the first with a bruised lower back after he was hit by Alex Rios line drive. X-rays were negative, the team said. Star third baseman David Wright missed his seventh straight game with a sore left shoulder, but fill-in Eric Campbell had three hits and an RBI for New York. Carlos Torres, pressed into long relief when Niese was injured, gave up two runs in 4 2-3 valuable innings. "Nobody expects stuff like that to happen. It does. This is baseball," Torres said. "Whoever they call down for, they step up and go out there and go do their job." Shin-Soo Choo hit a leadoff homer, and Adrian Beltre also went deep for the Rangers, who have dropped six in a row and 14 of 16. Their 10-game losing streak on the road is the clubs longest since a 12-game skid in 2003. "One day the pitching is really good, and one day the offence isnt helping," Choo said. "Right now, everything bad is coming together at the same time." Bobby Abreu drew a leadoff walk from Aaron Poreda (2-1) in the eighth and Campbell singled off Jason Frasor with one out before dArnaud sent a drive up the alley in right-centre. Batting .180 when he was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas in early June, dArnaud quickly went on a power-hitting tear in the Pacific Coast League. Brought back to the big leagues, he is hitting .303 with six RBIs in nine games since he was recalled. "I just try to keep my mind at ease and keep everything simple and not overstress myself, and thats been paying off," dArnaud said. Jenrry Mejia (5-3) retired Rios with two runners in scoring position to end the eighth. Mejia allowed an RBI single by Adam Rosales in the ninth before retiring pinch-hitter Robinson Chirinos on a tricky popup to finish a plodding game on Fireworks Night that took 4 hours, 8 minutes. Darvish, pushed back a day because of rain Thursday in Baltimore, entered with dominant stats against NL teams. But he was off in this one, allowing four runs and five hits in five innings. "He was a little erratic with his command, but I thought he did a good job of righting the ship there in the last three innings," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. Choo hit his 13th career leadoff homer, second this season, on Nieses third pitch. Moments later, Rios drive nailed Niese on the left side of his lower back. He recovered in time to get Rios at first base -- the only out he got -- before manager Terry Collins, pitching coach Dan Warthen and trainer Ray Ramirez came out to check on the left-hander. Niese repeatedly told Collins he was fine, but was removed without trying a warmup pitch. Torres was given all the time he needed to get loose. "It was precaution more than anything," Collins said. Niese fired his glove against the dugout wall and knocked over a bucket of bubble gum before disappearing down the tunnel. The teams most reliable starter this season, Niese was done after 12 pitches. He has gone 21 straight starts without allowing more than three earned runs -- the longest active streak in the majors. "Theres not much to say other than Im fine. I didnt want to be taken out. I just felt like I was cheated there a little bit," Niese said. Elvis Andrus had his second consecutive three-hit game for the Rangers. Darvish doubled to the left-centre fence for his second hit in 11 major league at-bats -- the first for extra bases. NOTES: Rather than risk a weather-related flight delay, the Rangers bused from Baltimore to New York after Thursday nights loss. Washington said it took about 3 hours, 15 minutes, and the team arrived around 3:30 a.m. ... Mets RHP Dillon Gee (strained right lat) went six innings in a rehab start for Class-A Brooklyn, striking out 10. He threw 75 pitches and gave up one run and three hits. ... Before the game, there was a video tribute and a moment of silence for former Mets GM Frank Cashen, the architect of their 1986 championship team. Cashen died Monday, and the Mets are honouring him by wearing a memorial patch with his initials on their sleeves. ... Wright hopes to play Saturday. The Tinkoff-Saxo rider was still dealing with the right shin he broke in a crash which ended his Tour de France on Stage 10. He hoped to defy his doctors and race in the home Grand Tour he won in 2008 and 2012, but he says there have been complications in his recovery.Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Greg Ward Jr.s third touchdown pass of the fourth quarter, a 25-yard strike to Deontay Greenberry with 59 seconds remaining, completed an unbelievable comeback that lifted Houston to a 35-34 victory over Pittsburgh in the Armed Forces Bowl. Greenberry was also on the other end of Wards successful 2-point conversion try that brought the Cougars all the way back from a 34-13 deficit with under four minutes left. Houston (8-5), which trailed 31-6 with 11 minutes to play, scored 29 fourth- quarter points and recovered a pair of onside kicks, the last leading to Greenberrys second touchdown catch of the day. The 25-point deficit was the largest overcome by a winning team in the fourth quarter in bowl history. Ward finished 15-of-24 for 274 yards and added 92 on the ground. Greenberry finished with 85 yards on four receptions, while Kenneth Farrow put up 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns to help the Cougars prevail in this matchup of interim coaches. Houston fired Tony Levine on Dec. 8, with defensive coordinator David Gibbs leading the team for the bowl game. Offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph directed Pittsburgh (6-7), which had head coach Paul Chryst depart for the same position at alma mater Wisconsin. James Connor rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts for the Panthers, with Tyler Boyd amassing 112 receiving yards on nine catches in the stunning loss. Ward engineered a 6-play, 83-yard drive he finished with a seemingly innocuous 8-yard touchdown toss to Greenberry that brought Houston within 34-20 with 3:41 left to play, but the score loomed far larger when Tyler White pounced on Ty Cummings onside kick to give the Cougars back the ball near midfield. Two straight completions from Ward to Markeith Ambles had Houston back in scoring range, and Demarcus Ayers came down with Wards 29-yard heave into the end zone on 4th-and-13 shortly afterward to suddenly cut the margin to seven points with 1:58 remaining. Cummings second onside try again went into the hands of a Houston player, with Farrow falling on the ball at the Cougars 43-yard line. Ward and Greenberry teamed up for a 38-yard gain on the next play, then combined for a 25-yard touchdown on a 3rd-and-16 situation to put Houston just a point away from a tie and possible overtime. Gibbs would have none of it, however, and his decision to go for two paid off when Ward found an open Greenberry in the back of the end zone for a 35-34 Cougars edge. A pass interference penalty that negated a fourth down stop for Houston on the ensuing possession kept the Panthers alive. Boyd dropped a deep pass from Chad Voytik that would have placed Pittsburgh deep in Cougars territory, however, and Voytiks next attempt fell incomplete to turn tthe ball over on downs with two seconds left. Cheap Air Jordan Shoes Free Shipping. Voytik ended 18-of-35 for 222 yards and a touchdown, and finished the second quarter strong to help the Panthers build a 17-6 lead at halftime. He completed three straight passes in front of Isaac Bennetts 12-yard run that gave Pittsburgh a 14-6 edge 1:27 prior to the intermission. After the Panthers got the ball back on a punt with 23 seconds left, the sophomore quarterback connected with Kevin Weatherspoon for gains of 13 and 16 yards to position Chris Blewitt to knock through a career-long 52-yard field goal on the halfs final play. Pittsburgh then put up points on its first three drives of the second half to temporarily turn the contest into a rout. Voytik skillfully directed a 13-play, 91-yard series in which he rushed three times for 39 yards and completed the trek with a 16-yard touchdown delivery to J.P. Holtz. Following a Houston punt, Voytik hit on 5-of-6 throws during a sequence that ended with Conners 5-yard run into the end zone that put the Panthers up 31-6 with 13:58 remaining. Wards 31-yard run and Greenberrys 14-yard grab on 3rd-and-14 extended the subsequent possession, which Farrow culminated with an 8-yard touchdown that provided the Cougars with some needed momentum. Pittsburgh was then able to take nearly 4 1/2 minutes off the clock before Blewitt blasted a 29-yard field goal for a 34-13 advantage with 6:14 to go. Both teams put together 15-play drives that resulted in their initial points, with the Panthers marching 92 yards to strike first and Houston countering with a 76-yard series later on. Pitts mammoth trek, which Conner capped with a 1-yard run less than a minute into the second quarter, featured three third-down conversions -- including Weatherspoons 17-yard catch on 3rd-and-12 and Voytiks 3-yard scramble in the red zone. Wards 16-yard run on 3rd-and-16 and a 20-yard scamper helped set up Farrows 2-yard plunge with 5:40 remaining in the first half. Kyle Bullards point- after try was blocked by Justin Moody, however, to keep the Panthers in front.
